John David and Heidi are friends of mine who several years ago followed Jesus into a slum in the Middle East. They lived on the second floor of a concrete box in a neighborhood of three million slum dwellers. In the summer, temperatures hovered around one hundred degrees in their living space, and in winter they could see their breath inside some mornings. Sickness and insomnia were among their closest companions—all because they were called by Jesus to “tend my sheep” among the poorest of the Muslim poor, not as distant, remote-control church planters, but as friends and neighbors.
